You can never be too thin (unless you’re a newspaper)

Yeah, we still get the print edition of the local newspaper delivered at my house. Frankly, I’ve wanted to cancel it many times — the online portal to the world meets my needs, and I dislike the waste a newspaper subscription generates — but my wife resists so we continue to get it.

My Sunday morning ritual is to take a few minutes with the paper, first picking out the large mass of ad inserts and pitching them directly into the recycling bin. (I always get that feeling then of helping destroy the planet with my subscription.) Then I flip through the remaining editorial sections and read the comics.

Today I was particularly struck not only by the large number of ad inserts (I will be glad to see that waste of paper eventually die out at the hands of digital technology), but by how thin the editorial heft of the paper was. With the ads gone, it had the feel of a typical weekday newspaper.

That’s not an entirely bad thing, since it means I spend less of my time “reading the paper.” But as the papers shrink more and more over time, I can’t help but think: eventually I’ll convince my wife of the logic of ending the paper subscription. :)
