Check out GlobalPost:
http://www.globalpost.com/

It was created by Phil Balboni, who created New England Cable News, and Charlie Sennott, late of the Boston Globe. They've created a news service compromised of mostly displaced newspaper reporters.

The real irony will come when the newspaper -- realizing they have a hole to fill -- contracts with this new news service to fill that hole.

It's no different than a company like IBM laying off engineers, then later hiring them as independent contractors. It fulfills a corporate need without paying those pesky employee benefits.

I wish these folks the best and hope they succeed. It's nice to see someone trying to make a difference!
